Job description, work day and responsibilities
A Cook is responsible for preparing and serving nutritious, well-presented meals within a care home, school, hospital, or commercial catering setting. Duties include planning menus in line with dietary requirements and preferences, ordering and managing stock, maintaining kitchen hygiene in compliance with food safety legislation, and cooking from scratch using fresh, quality ingredients where possible. Cooks are expected to cater for a range of dietary needs including allergen management, texture-modified diets, and cultural requirements. A basic food hygiene certificate is typically required, and previous experience in a similar catering role is essential. The ability to work efficiently, manage time well during busy service periods, and adapt recipes to changing requirements is important.
